What is Friend Repellant?
/friend/ re.pel.lant noun 1. a group of musicians dedicated to recording quality Christian music in whatever style the tunes dictate. 2. any decision that causes you to choose God's way over the ways of the world. 3. a lengthy explanation written below... "Do You Hear What I Hear"
Merry Christmas! It's Jesus birthday! He is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world"
Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne Baker wrote the original in 1962 as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We added some new lyrics to focus on Jesus - the true Prince of Peace. May He bless and keep you close this coming year. |

Friend Repellant?!?
First of all the name started as a joke. . . The idea was that if you wanted to clear a room, just play a recording of our music and the place would empty out. The name stuck because it made me laugh . . .
I still snicker when I hear it (you probably did too).
But, as I have thought about the name, there’s more to it then that. Contrary to the common Americanized idea that the Christian life is an easy happy road, the Bible warns us to expect trouble. There are many verses that speak of the hardships the world and Satan will bring upon us because of our faith in Jesus (here are a few).
As a Christian:
- the world will hate you (John 15:18 & Matthew 10:22) and you will be its enemy (James 4:4).
- you will be excluded, insulted, & rejected because of Christ (Luke 16:22).
- families may turn against each other (Matthew 10:21, 34-36).
- there will be those who want to kill you and think they are doing good (John 16:2).
- you may even face death for your belief in Jesus (Romans 8:36).
Not exactly what you would put on a promotional flyer or church billboard to bring people in the doors! While you may not face all of these in your lifetime, believing in Jesus and walking with Him in faith will cause friction as you interact with the world. In essence, there are times your faith can have a “Friend Repellant” effect on those closest to you. So expect a fight - Jesus did say, “In this world you will have trouble…”
“… but take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). While God doesn’t always keep us free from hardships, the good news is that He promises to be near and walk with us through them (Romans 8:35-40, Psalm 23). He gives us spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:13-17), and guards us in the midst of attacks (Philippians 4:6-7). Finally this short life is just a precursor to the eternity we will spend with Him in heaven. Those who are faithful to the end will be given “the crown of glory that will never fade away” in heaven (1 Peter 5:4, Revelation 2:10). That’s the good stuff!
Thus, the name Friend Repellant has stuck through the years. And although I get funny looks and questions from people almost every time I say it, I like it. I like it because those questions give me the opportunity to share the hope and salvation I have in Christ Jesus (1 Peter 3:15). So I say, bring on the questions & bring on the battle!
